Red lists document the extinction risk of species. The risk level is assessed by experts on the basis of a set of threat criteria using field data. The aim of red lists is to inform the actions of legislators and authorities in relation to species and nature conservation. They should not be confused with lists of legally protected species. Red Lists can be drawn up for different geographic or political reference areas, those at the national level are most common.
